22nd Mugello Road Race, final report

Other On the sunny and cool weekend of June 13th and 14th Scuderia Clemente Biondetti and ACI Firenze organized the 22nd edition of the . For the fifth time, the wonderful town of Firenzuola hosted this great automotive event and greeted the one hundred participants with the usual warmth and hospitality. The event took place over three days and was divided into three sections: the Rally, the Regolarità Sport, and the non-competitive Parade. This last section of the event was organized together with Club Ruoteclassiche di Prato. Friday was entirely dedicated to competitor registration and technical inspections, as well as first time participants familiarizing themselves with their surroundings. It so followed that many Porsche 911s, maybe too many, were unloaded from trucks and trailers belonging to the most heated competitors of the Italian Championship in this specialty. Other highlights included the Lancia Stratos, Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa and Tour de France, MG, and a Lea Francis 1500 Compressor from 1929. Not to mention the Alfa Romeo 33, the Jaguar XK, the Maserati sport, the Ferrari GTB, the Austin Healey 3000, the Abarth sport, and the ASA 1000 participating in the parade. After the retirement of the 2008 winners Plano e Davis, the crew composed of Marco Savioli and Alessandro Failla took the lead in the Rally section on another Porsche Carrera. The Regolarità Sport category was dominated by Pagni and Baldasseroni, who preceded Giansante and Sighicelli. On Sunday all competitors were able to enjoy the new section of the course that was introduced in this edition of event, which took them to the Passo della Raticosa going through Peglio, and then up to Passo della Futa, down through Cornacchiaia, up again through Traversa, and finally arriving back at Firenzuola after descending from the “Casetta”. After that, another 65 kilometers of breath-taking views and intense driving.<br><br> During the two days of the race, the cars competing in the event were preceded by those of the Parade section, the non-competitive side of the race. This allowed owners of fantastic automobiles to drive the course “en souplesse” with the special stages already closed to traffic. <br><br> The absolute winners of the Rally event, which counted 55 competitors at the starting line, were the Sicilians Savioli and Failla on Porsche 911, who confirmed their lead in the previous day and preceded Da Zanche and Ughetti, and Salvini and Salerno, all on Porsche 911. The Group wins, assigned on the basis of the competing cars’ ages, went to Mario de Luca and Roberto Consiglio on Porsche 911 for Group 1, reserved to cars built until 1969. The Second Group, including cars built until 1975, was won by Savioli and Failla, while Stefanacci and Bon, also in Porsche, won Group 3, reserved to cars built up until 1985.<br><br> The Regolarità Sport category had 17 starting crews and was won by Pagni and Baldasseroni followed by Giansante and Sighicelli, both on Porsche.
